Just like us, dogs love the taste of chocolate. However this is one treat you simply cannot give them.

Chocolate is very toxic to dogs. This is because it contains the chemicals Caffeine and Theobromine. Unlike us, dogs do not have the ability to break down these substances. Caffeine and Theobromine stimulate the nervous system of dogs, leading to hyper-excitability, tremors, twitching, hyperthermia and heart failure.

The toxicity levels of chocolate vary between milk and dark, and it is important to know what type and approximately how many grams of chocolate your dog may have eaten.

What are the signs of toxicity?

The following signs are usually seen within 12 hours of ingestion:

* Excitement/nervousness/trembling

* Vomiting/diarrhea

* Excessive thirst

* Muscle spasms

* Seizures

* Coma

* Death

If your dog has eaten chocolate, it will likely need veterinary attention.
